The Greek doctor Dioscorides states in his medical writings that the seeds of the plant are effective for purifying the blood, treating snake bites and treating jaundice and liver diseases.
In the sixteenth century Luniceros wrote that crushed thistle seeds are a remedy for liver diseases, and in the seventeenth century the well-known English herbalist Nicholas Culpepper tells about the plant being effective for treating jaundice and removing blockages in the liver and spleen.
Eclectic medicine in the USA of the late nineteenth century made use of thistle to treat menstrual problems, diseases of the veins and congestion in the liver, spleen and kidneys.
